Materials: Chart paper and markers, a note to parents explaining what to talk about with their child
Students will be asked to go home and talk to their families about the differnt holidays that they celebrate each year, and how they celebrate them. Then they will come back to class the next day and we will discuss as a class and write down the different celebrations on chart paper. We will discuss how different cultures celebrate holidays in different ways. (Precious Children, 1994)
Materials: Paper, Pencil or Pen, a list of students from a school in Serbia
Each student will pair up with a student in Serbia and become pen pals. They will be given the students name and will write the student a letter in class. The teacher will then collect the letters and mail them to the teacher at the school in Serbia. In the letter the students should include some questions they may have for the students about what we have learned about Serbia in class. They may also include some information about the United States. The students should tell their pen pals a little bit about themselves, what their interests are, their year in school, a little bit about their family. This activity will continue throughout the rest of the school year, and at the end of the year the students are welcome to include their address in their letters if they would like to continue to write their pen pal after the school year ends.
